Dear all
First time poster / new member (English speaking I am afraid). We have been fostering a Mechelse Herder Husky Cross Puppy for the past 4 weeks. He was supposed to be adopted but the new paretns pulled out - hence having him for 4 weeks. We now realise he needs puppy training ASAP and are looking into classes for him. We live in central Amsterdam - 2nd floor apartment - no outside space. Does anyone have any advice they can give us to help his learning? Does anyone else have a similar dog with no outside space?
His toilet training is actually going really well - though I am up and down 2 flights of stairs at least 10 times a day!
He is fine with other humans. Slowly introducing him to other dogs at the dog park.
Any help / advice will be greatly appreciated.
Dank je wel!!!
Welkom.
Geen idee waar je nu precies hulp bij nodig bent?
Je hebt je verdiept in beide rassen neem ik aan toen je aan deze pup begon?
Ga sowieso op zoek naar een goede hondenschool.
How old is the dog?
You say you have him for 4 weeks, he was supposed to go to another home... will he be your dog now, or is this a temporary situation?
What do you expect? A Mechelse herder and a Husky are dogs with very opposite character and needs. So why did you choose this crossbreed? It's important to know the connection between your own character, needs and interests in life and what the dog needs to make it a good match for both of you.
It's not as simple as: 'give me some advice for education', or 'where can I follow classes'. Because a Husky is completely different than a Mechelse Herder. It's not that you can apply some obidience-tricks for a herder and assume you will get the same results for a husky. It simply doesn't work like that, they are too different and need to be treated differently.
You can attend a puppy training class at a dog school in Amsterdam/your neighborhood.
Here's a list of dog schools (hondenscholen) in the Netherlands:

Perhaps you can also find them on Google maps.
He is 13 weeks old. To be clear, we did not choose him, we are fostering him from the DOA. He was the last of the litter to be re-homed, which is why we have him now. As I mentioned, he was supposed to be adopted by another family. That fell through and in the 4 weeks we have had him, we have fallen in love with him. But we know both breeds are notoriously tricky, which is why before we offer to adopt him, we are gathering as much information as we can. We want to do what is best for the dog.
Thanks for the infromation - it is really apprecited.
Omnia, but they work with clicker training, they do allow if you really don't want to, without and based on positive training. de Gabber, also in West. You can also check here https://www.houdenvanhonden.nl/zoek-een-vereniging/kc/noord-holland/
Doesn't the DOA offers support for the people who are fostering their shelterpuppies, or at least help you to find a reliable dogtherapist who can give you good and practical advice?
You also can check this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aIdKdba_Wmo&list=PL0C724F6F6A597540 which also works well for basic training. If you deal with consistence behavior problems its a different story. For now it is just lots of work in that age Compare him to a kid, sometimes you wanne stick them behind wallpaper aswell but you sit it out.
DOA are amazing, but they have limited resources. Hence looking for "private" solutions.
I have noted all the training centres mentioned and will see what can be done tomorrow.
On a postive note, Wolfie is the happiest thing you ever did see. Great with humans and other dogs. Amazing blue eyes. We just want to make sure he stays happy - and we are prepared to put in the work now to make that happen. As best we can.
