de inleiding:
This study assessed the seroprevalence of anti-Borrelia burgdorferi antibodies in New Brunswick dogs. Testing of 699 serum samples from dogs across the province revealed a 6% province-wide seropositivity, more than 6 times higher than that found in 2008. The rapid increase in seropositivity indicates increased Lyme disease risk to both canine and human health.
Lyme borreliosis (LB), commonly referred to as Lyme disease, is a serious tick-borne bacterial infection of dogs and humans, caused by Borrelia spp. bacteria (1). In Canada only the single genospecies, Borrelia burgdorferi sensu stricto, is recognized as causing Lyme disease, but in Europe other Borrelia such as B. garinii and B. afzelii are also known to cause disease, a situation made more complex by co-infection with other tickborne pathogens (1). Ixodes ticks, I. scapularis in eastern North American and I. pacificus in the west are the predominant vectors (1). The tick is an efficient vector because uninfected tick larvae, nymphs, or adults feed on infected wildlife reservoir hosts, including birds and rodents, become infected, and then transmit the infection to larger mammals when taking their next blood meal (1). As ticks are indiscriminate in their choice of host, the pathogens can be transmitted from wild animals to companion animals and humans (1).
Due to their lifestyle dogs are at risk of contact with ticks (2). Clinically ill dogs do not display the hallmark erythema migrans rash (or the rash goes undetected under their fur) and so the disease often goes unnoticed until later onset symptoms appear (2,3). All infected immunocompetent dogs are thought to develop an immune response, but only a minority develop polyarthritis, joint pain, lethargy, transient fever, anorexia, and neurological symptoms (2,3). However, recent studies have suggested that asymptomatic dogs may display histopathologic changes despite their lack of visible signs (3–5) and breed plays a role in the development of clinical signs (2).
tsja. niemand leest dit natuurlijk. daarom zeg ik maar gewoon: ja, door teken overdraagbare ziektes zijn een serieus probleem voor zowel mensen als honden!
