History:
The term “Bulldog” was first mentioned in books around 1500, the oldest spelling of Bulldog was Bondogge or Bolddogge. Around 1631 or 1632 it was the first time to reference the modern name Bulldog and around 1740 the first picture from the bulldog appeared. The Bulldog was a popular breed for Bullfighting, Bear fighting and dog fighting. Around 1835 the number of English Bulldogs took off because the fighting with dogs become illegal. Dog dealer Bill George continually promoted bulldogs as pets. Bulldogs were not very healthy, they start aging at five or six years! That’s why the dog breeders crossed the English bulldog with a pug. The outcome was a shorter, wider dog with a flat muzzle. Though today's Bulldog looks tough, he cannot perform the job he was originally created for as he cannot withstand the rigors of running and being thrown by a bull, and also cannot grip with such a short muzzle.
Symbol of UK :
The English bulldog is the symbol in the UK. The English bulldog is popularly used to represent England or the United Kingdom. The English bulldog breed is the official mascot of the United States Marine Corps and many bases have their own mascot on base. Thirty-nine American universities use a Bulldog as their mascot.
Appearance:
The English bulldog is a breed that’s known because they’re flat muzzle, their wrinkles and their popularity. There body is big and they have a lot of muscles and most of the English bulldogs have a lot of fat too. They have a kind of wrinkles and big folds in their skin, that’s why they have such a fat look. Above their nose the have one thick fold, called rope. The skin is hanging under the neck and the have drooping lips where you can see there pointed teeth’s, many bulldog’s have an under bite, the theets in the mandible grew over the theets in the upper jaw. The coat is short and smooth and the colours that are allowed are the colours red, fawn, white, brindle and piebald. The male dog weighs about 45-55 pounds and a Bitch weighs about 45 pounds.
Temperament:
The Bulldog is seen by many as an aggressive. , lazy dog. Who says that have no idea of what a bulldog really is!
The English bulldog is a sweet dog, but they need a consistent hand. It’s not a dog that you should take if you want to walk far distance in the summer, but they can move very quickly over short distance. Like every dog they need physical exercise but not as much as the most dogs. They can live in an apartment and other urban environments, they not need much space, a couch is enough. The breeders of the English bulldog have worked hard to reduce, almost remove the aggression from these dogs, which they had for the fighting with Bulls, Dogs and Bears. Now they have a good temperament. They are patient, friendly, and good with children, other dogs and other pets and they are really sweet dogs that love to cuddle!
The English Bulldog feels his self comfortable if he can run after a ball for a moment, get something to eat and take a nap on your leap J The Perfect dog if you Treat him well!
Health Problems:
The bulldog is a nice dog, but they have a lot of health problems. Because they breed the English bulldog with such a short muzzle, they have problems with breathing, they snore, when it is hotter they can’t walk a lot and in the heat the need shade and lots of water!! Bulldogs can easily become overheated and also die from that. They also have hip dysplasia and patella luxation, hip dysplasia is wrong use/wear of the hip bowls and patella luxation is moving knee disks. Because of their wrinkles and skin they have also eye problems, for example Cherry eye and problems with the inner eyelid. Bulldogs need good daily exercise because if they don’t get enough exercise it is possible for bulldogs to become overweight, which could lead to hart and lung problems.
The bulldog is certainly not the healthiest dog breed, they can have an expensive vet bill.
Old English bulldog:
The old English bulldog is the big brother of the English bulldog! Not really of course! But it is a bigger bulldog with a longer muzzle, they have the look how the were in the beginning of the bulldog. They are wider, have more muscles, have a longer muzzle, fewer wrinkles and have higher withers. So they are much healthier then the English bulldogs. They can walk longer distance, work (bullfight, obedience), run also long distance, they are sweet, patient and extremely strong! You can say the old English bulldog is a bulldog that is much healthier then the most modern bulldogs! But they also can get hip dysplasia and patella luxation, but the breeders pay more attention on the health then on the looks, anyway I think the old English bulldog look better than the English bulldog!!
Future:
I think it is important to breed more for the health than for the look. Because many dog breeders from al kind of breeds are breeding on the looks from the dog, not for the health, so I’m not blaming only the English bulldog breeders! Because bulldog breeders breed for the looks, not for the health: that’s why the Bulldog’s muzzle is so short they even have problems with breathing! If breeders more breed on health, which means if they breed the muzzle of the English bulldog longer, so if they only use English bulldogs who can breath properly and have a longer muzzle, they breed for the health. Then there come much more bulldogs that can breathe normally and can walk longer distance. They live longer, without breathing problems! Patella luxation and hip dysplasia can be reduced if only bulldogs without hip dysplasia or patella luxation are used for breeding, hip dysplasia and patella luxation can’t remove from good breeding because how the boss treat the dog (especially when they are a puppy) says also very much, about hip dysplasia and patella luxation.
Differences between past and present:
The English bulldog was in the past a bullfighter, bear fighter and dogfighter. Because of that they had a longer muzzle so the can grab the bull, bear or dog when it’s necessary. The modern bulldogs don’t need to grab other animals so their muzzle is breed almost flat. In the past bulldogs run long distance after a bull, bear or dog to kill them, now days they don’t need to run after other animals so they don’t do that and because of their short muzzle it is impossible to run for a long distance because they can’t breath that well. In the past the bulldog was also athleticism and bigger than de modern bulldogs, now the bulldog is a small and fat dog (muscles)
